Kayla Zhao is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist dedicated to providing compassionate, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed care to children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. She believes therapy is most effective when clients feel genuinely heard, supported, and empowered to navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence, insight, and emotional resilience.
Kayla works with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, emotional dysregulation, identity exploration, family conflict, behavioral concerns, and major life transitions. Her approach is grounded in a systemic and strengths-based perspective that recognizes the impact of relationships, culture, family dynamics, and lived experiences on emotional well-being and personal growth.
With experience across school-based, nonprofit, community mental health, faith-based, and crisis intervention settings, Kayla has provided therapy tailored to each client’s unique developmental, emotional, and relational needs. Her clinical background includes conducting comprehensive mental health assessments, supporting clients through periods of crisis and transition, and maintaining ethical, client-centered care.
Kayla has also worked extensively with youth and families, providing mindfulness-based psychoeducation, emotional regulation support, and coping skills development. In addition, she served as a Crisis Counselor with the Crisis Text Line, offering immediate emotional support and crisis intervention to individuals experiencing distress.
Her therapeutic style is warm, collaborative, grounded, and nonjudgmental. Kayla strives to create a safe and supportive environment where clients can openly explore emotions, relationships, and personal experiences at their own pace while also gaining practical tools for healing and growth. Her work is informed by person-centered therapy, family systems theory, trauma-informed care, and culturally sensitive practices.
Kayla earned her Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Alliant International University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Los Angeles. She has completed additional training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Psychological First Aid, and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Traumatized Children.
